I can't understand why these alphas are such a big deal!

Why, oh why does the tech community continue to feel the need to scrutinize, review, and screen capture each and every alpha build of Ubuntu? Ubuntu 12.04 was just released last month; does anyone actually expect any ground-breaking changes in these early alpha builds? There's a shiny new 3.4 kernel, so what. I just installed a 3.4 kernel in my trusty LMDE installation too! Let's take screenshots and post an article about it. It's like somebody forgot to mention to the Canonical backed media machine that Ubuntu is no longer the top Linux distribution or the darling it once was. Therefore, few are waiting with baited breath to see a feature article every time an Ubuntu developer picks his nose.

Yeh it would be great to have an Ubuntu free news site im visiting lxer less and less now due to all the Ubuntu stories that are nothing more than puff pieces and the cr@ppy live dvd reviews that keep turning up here.

Oh, come on Koriel, you can't take that against Lxer. Lxer is its members and where you read their comments and post yours. Do you see anyone who is giving Ubuntu any praise here!

Also, Koriel, anyone can post stories here, as long as they are Linux/FOSS related, not only the volunteer editors. If you have specific interests then others probably do too, and you could benefit the community by posting stories in your interest area to the LXer newswire.

Ubuntu is masterful at marketing. Nothing wrong with that, I think.

I didn't say that frequenters of Lxer were Ubuntu friendly, what I am criticising is the quality of news items that have begun appearing here.

I have been coming to this site since about a month after Dave first created it and the quality of articles have certainly deteriorated especially over the last year or so. I just believe that some harsher editorial considerations should be made regarding article acceptance.

Just my tuppence worth, simply because i would rather not see Lxer slide into mediocrity or even worse a puff piece newsfeed for Mark (Bill Gates is my middlename) Shuttleworth.

Koriel, how about becoming the solution to the problem you see, and post that better quality of news you believe is missing. I'd be just as happy to see less of Canonicals PR machine posted here.

@Koriel,

The point I was making is that, Lxer is my favourite site NOT because of the articles it links to, but because of the comments made by its members and discussions that take place.

Any links that don't interest me I just skip, but they might be of interest to someone else. Try this approach, it might help.

Ah... the neverending Ubuntu hype machine at work.

What's the best way to get rid of these stories? Pick your three favorite distributions, preferably fairly obscure ones but really any will do, and every time there is a Firefox alpha or a package update or you install something not in the repositories either take the announcement or write a blog post and then add it to LXer.com and (if they let you) brand X (as tuxchick calls it) as well. Maybe then editors will get the message and stop posting non-news.

Indeed. If every LXer regular would throw a good story or two into the queue every week, it would broaden the scope quite a bit.
