For actual vmware patches that work with pretty much all distros check out this guy

http://weltall.heliohost.org

I have been using his patches for over a year now and I hope he keeps up the good work.

I agree with you, Koriel. I'm fed up with the endless Ubuntu hype machine. There are other, and IMNSHO better, distros out there.

@Koriel,

Amen. Also fed up with Baboontu 12.04 this and Baboontu 12.04 that. What can we do about it, though, other than just keep on ignoring it?? But btw, I find there is a noticeable wee bit of a learning curve to using your guy's wmware patches.

Yes, their is a small learning curve but its mostly because his patches are for all distro's not just one but most folks who are running VMWare on Linux should have the level of skill to do this anyway as VMWare has never been easy on the Linux platform but it does have far superior legacy PC hardware emulation than the likes of VirtualBox.

I have run his patches on Fedora, Pclinuxos, Ubuntu, Debian and they have pretty much just worked as long as you follow the instructions to the letter, so i'm just grateful for the work he has done.

@smallbox

I don't have anything against Ubuntu as a distro its a perfectly fine distro, my main distro Liniux Mint is based on it, its their over the top marketing im against.

Im suprised that an Ubuntu cd doesn't fall out everytime i open a box of cornflakes considering the level of marketing they do. Speaking of which im feeling peckish and a bowl of cornflakes sounds good.

Marketing linux is a good thing. I have no problem with a billionaire(?) shelling out the cash to do so, as no other distro seems willing or able to compete in that way. That said, endless coverage of Ubuntu minutiae does get tiresome. Now... where are those cereal flakes?

Yes, just one flaw there he isn't marketing Linux he is marketing Ubuntu.

If you're only now fed up with an overabundance of Ubuntu news, where have you been for the last five years? Or did it take this long for you to have enough?

I think the honeymoon is over for Ubuntu at present. I still think it has a lot to offer, but back in the day you didn't have Mint. I really do hope Unity pays off (literally and figuratively) for Ubuntu and things settle down a bit for the project in the next year or so.

Like it or not, nobody's making quite the play Ubuntu is (and has been making) on the desktop, and add to that their work on the server and cloud -- they're doing quite a lot. I think the gamble (on Unity and services) is paying off because there's really no one equipped to fill the shoes that Ubuntu's been wearing for years (mainly fanboy favorite making a play for desktop domination and extending ever so slightly beyond the already converted).
