It's a gol'durn travesty, is what it is, not including dired, the file manager in emacs. I've yet to find something I can't do from emacs' dired mode and when I do, it's usually cuz I haven't learned how, yet. Best file manager since XTree. nb |

Very true. Emacs does everything. Even the word "Orthodox" would work, since the GUI is obviously "Reformed". |

No Konqueror, either. |

Bob - I don't think konqueror's split-pane mode counts as an orthodox file manager. |

I thought split-panel file managers such as Norton Commander/Midnight Commander are the "orthodox" file managers.-- I am shocked, truely shocked that a Linux-oriented rag ;-) would imply otherwise! Please to cancel my subscription, forthwith. (edit: though hardly conclusive, I see that Wikipedia supports my (ahem) orthodox position... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File_manager ) |

Jacog, There's a split-screen mode? (BTW, humor. Haha.) |

Quoting:I've yet to find something I can't do from emacs' dired mode and when I do, it's usually cuz I haven't learned how, yet. Best file manager since XTree. The FSF's 'GNU Emacs' site is http://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/, the GNU Emacs Manual's 'Dired' section is found at https://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/html_node/emacs/Dired.html, and the EmacsWiki describing the 'Dired Plus' extension to Dired is found at http://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/DiredPlus Note from the first link that that the current stable release of Emacs is 24.1 |

There's so much competition from the non-free file managers in Linux, we really need to give the free ones some love ... |

Some people might not see your invisible dripping sarcasm tags, Steven_Rosenberg :) |

Ytree here. I use it constantly. |

There is also the Sunrise Commander, for GNU Emacs: * http://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/Sunrise_Commander * https://github.com/escherdragon/sunrise-commander * http://joseito.republika.pl/sunrise-commander Cheers. |

I keep telling myself that some day I'm going to "learn emacs" (ok, dabble a bit, learn some basics) nut I never get around to it. But as it is, I sometimes need to "brush-up" my basic Vim skills (if only because it's worth it just to be able to easily insert a column of text). Well, maybe when the weather turns cold and wet again... |

@ escherdragon that's a cool nick! |
