Most of my household's machines are on Cat-5. Yes, we have a WAP, but only for the toys (Wii, DS-Lites and Windows). |

I didn't want cable TV and the phone company wanted me to pay for a landline or else make a two year commitment. I'm a renter. No commitments here. I have a little bitty WiMax router that goes anywhere. It works for me. |

@caitlyn That's got to be hellish on downloading distros. |

@JaseP: Not at all. The speed is comparable to what I got with a low end cable modem connection. Downloading a 4GB DVD image takes about five hours. I am on an unlimited plan so I don't worry about using that much bandwidth at all. |

Maybe the cable company is really bad in your area, but I've actually been pretty pleased with Cox Cable in my area. The internet cost isn't dirt-cheap ($46/month; I only have internet service, no TV), but it's very fast and pretty reliable. No commitments I can recall. It's one of the few things I like about where I live, and I hope my next move doesn't take me to someplace where Comcast is the only choice. |

Here Time Warner is the only choice for cable. Last I heard it was really expensive unless you also bought their digital cable offering, which is also really expensive. I have no need or desire to change ISPs at this time. |
