I use Bluefish all the time. It's brilliant, but... this isn't a review. It reads like marketing hype. Sorry, but what passes for an article today isn't much of anything. At least in the old days you could use the newsprint for bird cage liner. |

Same here, caitlyn. I've been a big fan of Bluefish for awhile now. And you're right -- this article is pretty superficial. |

I've tried Bluefish and some other similar FOSS app, and I wasn't too impressed. They really didn't seem to be all that great for importing an existing project, nor did they seem to work with PHP. In fact, they seem to be stuck with a 90s mindset to writing web pages. Who writes static HTML any more? The only tool I've found that's really that useful for the bit of web development I've done is Firebug, or the very similar function built into Chromium, as the biggest difficulty I've found in the whole process is getting the CSS right. |

@Khamul, perhaps you should give MonoDevelop a try. |

Actually, Khamul, if the website you are developing is small and static in nature then static HTML sometimes is the best approach. I have done PHP and CSS with Bluefish and it does get it right. I've also used Bluefish since the late '90s so I probably find things faster with it than any other editor, which may, of course, bias my opinion. Anyway, I still think it's a fantastic editor. I tend to do dynamic websites in Drupal and, of course, Bluefish is not exactly the best choice for anything except simple template edits when working on a Drupal based site. |

@caitlyn: If for nothing else, PHP is nice so you don't have to repeat the same code over dozens of pages on a site, for instance if you have a menu, a header, a footer, etc. Doing those in static HTML seems rather idiotic. @tracyanne: Sorry, I don't do Mono. I might as well use Windows if I go that route. |

Quoting:Sorry, I don't do Mono. I might as well use Windows if I go that route. in what way does using Mono equate to using Windows? |
Khamul May 27, 2012 11:26 PM EDT |
Well, it's encumbered by MS patents for one. I had mono in college, and it wasn't a fun experience then. |

So, I use Pinta instead of Gimp.
It's using Mono.
That makes me a microsoft lover, isn't it. I join TC here:..........Bull5h1t!. >>>>>>@tracyanne: Sorry, I don't do Mono. I might as well use Windows if I go that route Another cr@p way of thinking |

@nikkels, even if Mono was encumbered by Microsoft patents (which once again I stress, it is not, and there are multiple ways to confirm this), it would still not equate to using Windows. Windows is a Microsoft operating system, Mono and C# and .NET are programming tools, and like PHP and Python, Mono is a cross platform programming toolset, and like PHP and Python, Mono doesn't depend on Windows.... You don't even need Windows to host ASP.NET applications developed on Linux using Mono C#. In addition, given the way in which Microsoft, and indeed most other Software Companies are applying for, and being granted, patents for even the most trivial, and obvious, of things. It is probably true that almost anything in Linux and Free Software in encumbered by Microsoft patents, until someone can invalidate those patents. |

Android is encumbered by MS patents.
So, every linux user should <not> use Android, right ?
I can see already their market share dropping to near 0
Grin TC, sorry, my language was a little bad. I just wanted to say I agree with you. Not against you |

But if a Mono app runs on Android... Gah, that'd be about like finding the Higgs boson. |
dinotrac May 28, 2012 1:44 PM EDT |
@gus3 -- Higgs boson comes under one of Microsoft's vaporware patents. |
