I suppose I'll have to get used to it eventually, but the text editing directly on the image is awkward. I don't know where to type, and my first attempt came out looking terrible. I miss being able to type in the extension for a file. I keep having to backtrack to get to the export dialogue. There were other problems figuring out the new interface. I don't doubt that I'll get past this, but I have doubts that it's really going to make a big difference to my work. I got used to KDE4, but it doesn't really do very much that KDE3 couldn't do, and it wasn't worth the two and a half years of aggravation. (The time it took for to learn how to run KDE4 as much like KDE3 as possible.)

So far I'm quite happy with GIMP 2.8. Maybe I just adapt quickly but I haven't found using it to be much of an adjustment so far. I did a new logo for my company yesterday on a photographic and really was pleased with the results. The text box dialog really didn't seem all that different to me.

Oh, and yes, I like KDE4 :)

Unfortunately GIMP 2.8 still supports only eight bits per channel. This is inadequate for the restoration of historical black and white photographs.

I am patiently waiting for the 16 bit per channel support to come along. I think that is not scheduled to appear until verson 3.0.
