before the ubuntu bashing begins for yet another fork instead of contributing upstream, take a look at this thread: http://mail.gnome.org/archives/desktop-devel-list/2011-May/m... (from ken vandine's comment in the thread)

So, if anyone criticizes Ubuntu it's "bashing"? Is that your way of dismissing all criticism in advance?

In this case I am an equal opportunity criticizer. I'd recommend reading the responses to the linked thread before jumping to conclusions. There is plenty to criticize when it comes to GNOME 3 development. I'll grant you that. There is also valid criticism of Ubuntu going it's own way on all things desktop.

I'm filing all of this under "healthy competition." Having both Unity and GNOME Shell competing for users and matching/exceeding each other in terms of features should only make both projects stronger.

caitlyn: i didn't say that criticism is bashing.

(working out the difference between bashing and criticizing is left as an exercise for the reader)

Steven_Rosenberg: I agree with you. You'll note that none of my negative comments about Ubuntu have ever been about Unity. The most negative thing I have said about both Unity and GNOME 3 is that I don't care for them. I also make it clear that is a matter of personal preference and nothing more.

eMBee: you certainly implied that criticism == bashing. Clue: I've seen very little Ubuntu bashing on LXer.com. I've seen criticism that is mainly legitimate: bugs not getting fixed, regressions in hardware support and the like. One thing about folks on LXer: they tend to be pretty technically savvy and very specific about what went wrong and what went right.

caitlyn: fair enough, maybe you are right and calling the discussions about ubuntu on lxer "bashing" is a bit harsh.

Criticism is, well, self-evident.

Bashing is what results when the criticisms are ignored long enough that the critics decide the developers can't be trusted.

Yes, bashing is probably personal, and it might not be fair. But then again, it might be perfectly valid.
