Really save yourself the headache and look at Mint.

Overlay scrollbars really suck.

You can turn them off but it doesn't work 100%.

Fail Canonical.

Any Canonical people or Ubuntu experts reading this and willing to effectively respond ? Perhaps this is another good opportunity to demonstrate how simple-to-use Ubuntu 12.04 really is.

Stopped using it on my laptop 2 versions ago, so I can't help.

OTOH, Mint is a really good fix for your Ubuntu problems.

Mint is what I switched the laptop to 2 versions ago. I use it for work everyday. My desktops run Debian so there was no problem there.

Switching from Ubuntu is not a problem and is probably a lot easier than many users think.

Since Ubuntu is already 90% Debian (and 10% bugs and annoyances), the easiest thing to do to have a clean and simple desktop experience is to install the RealThing. Runs nice here on both servers and desktops.

It seems to methat you could also focus on the particular desktop you want, or is best recommended by TRUE(!) impartial reviewers, and then choose your distro based on this. Since some people thinking about installing the latest highly touted version of Ubuntu just won't want to muck around with overlaying Ubuntu with Mint (or make ANY effort to switch away from Ubuntu's LUnity), they can instead choose the particular desktop form they would like of RealThing Debian, Mint or others, right from the get-go.
