I was running Ubuntu 10.10, clinging to Gnome 2.x, and decide to move to LMDE / Cinnamon. It is some steps behind old Gnome, but is working well enough. Are others running Unity? If not, what? |

not me |

I'm currently running KDE 4.8. on Linux Mint KDE. It is a capable desktop and does most of what a desktop should do. It's just that I'm not a KDE person. For some reason it can't get me one bit excited about itself. I'm considering testing Cinnamon 1.4 on LMDE to see if it has matured over 1.3. I like where Clement Lefebvre was taking it, but 1.3 was extremely buggy for me and 1.2 was too sparse. Maybe 1.4 is the ticket. First I was an Amiga refugee. Then I was a Windows refugee. Now I'm a Gnome 2 refugee. Strange how things seem to repeat. |

I'm running KDE 4.8.2. But I really mis Nautilus, Dolphin is simply not a patch on GNOME 2 Nautilus. I'm going to check out MATE. Other than Dolphin I really like KDE, but not having a decent file manager is starting to annoy me. |

Tracyanne: Why not just use konqueror in file browsing mode?!?! |
tracyanne Apr 26, 2012 4:58 PM EDT |
Because Konqueror (KDE4) is not a patch on Konqueror KDE 3 |

I'm running a mix of KDE 4.8.2, Xfce and LXDE on a mix of ROSA Desktop, SalixOS, Yarok (in development, of course) and Absolute Linux. ROSA and Absolute are things I'm reviewing but ROSA may end up being a keeper. I like a lot of what I see in the beta. |

Running Xfce 4.8 on a stripped down Linux Mint 12. Will be switching to KDE on either Linux Mint Debian. Mageia or ROSA depending on how my suitability testing of those distros go. Just waiting for the final releases of Mageia 2, ROSA and my new RAM arriving before finally deciding. |

I've just installed nautilus (GNOME 3) and its a big improvement on Dolphin. One really nice thing about KDE is the settings, it's really easy to change the file manager |

I am interested in Cinnamon but I am waiting for the next Linux Mint release to check it on my Arch box. (I wonder why we always feel the need to tell which distro we are using?) |

Quoting:I've just installed nautilus (GNOME 3) and its a big improvement on Dolphin I never used nautilus, but may be I should check it out. But I am just curious what does it do more or better than Dolphin or Konqueror? Or is it just the name? :-) |

I run DLSXDEwB (Debian Linux Squeeze Xfce Debian Edition With Backports) on all three of my home-office PCs -- with backports of Iceweasel, Icedove and LibreOffice. |

@Fettoosh, it's a lot of little things that i find much more efficient than Dolphin. for example, to sort the files/folders, you can do it from a context menu, rather than, as in the case of Dolphin, have to go to the main menu. The context menu seems better laid out, and (another example) the copyto/moveto options are more accessible. Nautilus doesn't have that horrible places panel with it's expanding and contracting icons. The GNOME3 versions does annoyingly have the bookmarks at the top, rather than the bottom (but this isn't in the same annoyance league as the places panel in Dolphin) Nautilus has lots of scripts, that are easily accessible, and you can easily add others, including your own, which actually makes it more configurable than Dolphin (a first for GNOME 3). There may be a few extensions missing, from GNOME3 nautilus, that were included with GNOME2 nautilus. I'll have to investigate further, or I'll notice when i go to use them. Some of the things I can do easily from Nautilus context menu, I couldn't find on the Dolphin context menu, and had to open an application. Mainly to do with processing images and videos. |

Oh and another thing. I don't recall seeing on Dolphin. When I open a shell script with nautilus, I get a message window that asks me if I want to run the script or open it in an editor. That stops me/people from accidentally running the script, but the option to do so is there. I think Dolphin just opens it in an editor. |

Quoting:it's a lot of little things that i find much more efficient than Dolphin. I understand. Just remember that Dolphin is still being developed, improved, enhanced and expanded. Some of those you mentioned, if I understood them correctly, are already in Dolphin. Sorting is readily available when in Detailed Listing mode. Clicking a column title toggles the sorting between ascending & descending order. Otherwise, the items are sorted by names in ascending order and have to use the main menu option. Could the context menu made to include sorting? I am sure it can be, and I am not sure if it is in development plan, but it still could be a good suggestion to submit. copyto/moveto options are available to be added to the context menu. Under Settings=> Configure Dolphin=> General=> Context Menu tab to select those options. I am sure other options can be added by the developers in the future if there were requests or if they find some other apps that are generally beneficial. Context Menu for a specific file type, it can be modified to include any number of applications a user wants to be opened by. You can do that by right click on the file => select Properties => select the little wrench tool icon opposite to "Type : xxxx" in that view. I am sure the rest should be straight forward. |

Fettoosh, I've actually already gone back to Dolphin, as in the end, it's the lesser of two evils. |

Quoting:I've actually already gone back to Dolphin, ... Oh good, I don't have to check out Nautilus any time soon, may be some time in the future. :-) I tell you, Dolphin kind of grows on you. It seems to me that when the designs of KDE 4 and apps were laid out, one thing they made sure of is to build highly modular and extensible architecture. |

Quoting:Running Xfce 4.8 on a stripped down Linux Mint 12. Besides the bigger desktops of Xfce and KDE, there are alternative desktops tied in with distros such as Ubuntu-based Bodhi Linux (Enlightenment) and Debian-based Crunchbang Linux (Openbox). It is entirely possible that Bodhi Linux will be coming out with another new release sometime soon, following last week's official release of Ubuntu 12.04. |
