Speaking of KDE and not 'buntu, I'm download the ROSA 2012 Marathon beta tonight, as well as the LXDE based ROSA 2012 LTS. These two look very promising, and very possibly worth successors to Mandriva. The custom apps mentioned in this article look very interesting indeed.

I tried out their custom KDE desktop and I have to say it was pretty slick. Their mixture of GTK and QT apps was pretty flawless and that stack-folder thing was very cool. From the screenshots I saw their LXDE desktop looked almost identical to their KDE desktop which is kind of neat.

I'm looking forward to trying the LXDE version. The system requirements are surprisingly small for something Mandriva based.

Mandrake were always good at that, it's good to see the Mandrake/Mandriva devs are still getting the mixed GTK and QT environment thing right.

Hmm I may have to take a look at ROSA if their QT/GTK mixing is that good.

FWIW, now 4 days to the final release: http://mibpianetalinux.org/mibcd/cd2012/main/cd.html

@tracyanne: I think most of the devs who did so well at that are now working on the Mageia project, which is also in beta right now and is also worth watching. The ROSA Labs devs seem to be very good at desktop design as well.

@Koriel: Unless your bandwidth is metered there is no cost except your time. I'm thinking this may well be worth a look. Of course, some here know I've liked Mandrake/Madriva for a long time.

I currently use Mageia 1 on a vm for when I have to test proxying stuff under KDE and it was pretty good, they also have a new version being released soon currently at beta 3 i think.

So it looks like all the Mandriva offshoots are busy little bee's.
