Who chose this ridiculous name? What does Indiana Jones have to do with operating systems or computers anyway?

Dumb comment. What makes you think it's named for the fictional character and not for the U.S. state? What makes this name dumber than any other OS name other than the might Khamul thinks it's dumb?

Agree, caitlyn. Of all the ridiculous names out there, this doesn't come close to the top of the list. The name has nothing to do with Indiana Jones -- and if memory serves (and someone who knows can jump in here), Project Indiana was a part of Sun around the time of the Oracle acquisition and when Sun was bought, OpenIndiana was the open version of the Solaris OS (also, it may get its name from Ian Murdock, who was at Sun at the time and who also is from Indiana -- I don't know if that's the case).

Personally, I kind of like OpenIndiana.

It has kind of a nice rhythm when you say it out loud.

In case it's unclear, there's a component in humor that is vital to its very existence: Humor has to be funny.

My bad. I have the classic accountant's dry sense of humor. So dry that one may need a divining rod to find it.

That was not a comment related to your post, DrGeoffrey. It was in reference to "@caitlyn: Humorless as always" (and I don't know her that well, but I bet she has a sense of humor).

Actually, now that song is stuck in my head. Thanks a lot. :-)

The point about Indiana Jones should have been a big tip-off that it wasn't serious. Just because you don't get or like the humor doesn't mean it's OK to bash the attempt.

I have a sense of humor. I can still comment negatively on really poor, pitiful attempts at humor that aren't clearly humor and certainly aren't funny.

That's ok, I can comment negatively on really poor, pitiful attempts at commentary that clearly aren't intelligent and certainly aren't insightful.

That's your opinion. Mine differs.

So OpenIndiana isn't a silly name but DoudouLinux is?

I really do think there is a terrible smell of hypocrisy in these parts lately....

${Deity} help anyone that makes fun of something related to the US.

Unfortunately Khamul you are almost always serious in your forum posts and I, like other forum members are not going to easily infer humor from you unless you make it obvious. We are all communicating without the luxuries of inflection and delivery in our postings. Never underestimate the power of a ':-)' or 'lol' or the old standby [not serious] tag.

For my part I think FOSS is riddled with bad names, its to the point the worse they are the better.. I find it to be an enduring part of FOSS culture.

Libraries named Clutter, a distribution named Debris... We don't have bad names in the Linux community, do we? :)
