The cheapest of these "alternatives" is nearly 5 times the cost of the most expensive Pi. The low cost of the Pi is really what makes it attractive IMO.

Exactly, If a Pi board is more than sufficient to do the job, it doesn't make sense to pay for more than what is needed?

Different strokes for different folks, but, yeah. Those devices don't seem to be aimed at the same market as the raspberry pi.

One big thing they lack -- is a price point that overcomes resistance to tinkering. I could see scenarios where the pi encouraged you to try something out, only to discover that you actually need something one of these other products provides, and that's ok -- it's the essence of prototyping.

I haven't read the article, but generally speaking, offering something up as an "alternative" to something else, but which costs 5 times as much, is downright insulting.

It's like telling some guy who's looking at cars in the $30k range that he should look at a Maserati or Ferrari. The Maserati is only 4 times as much, after all; he should be able to afford that, right?

insulting?

Your reaction seems far more insulting than offering alternatives. You seem to believe that people are too stupid to say no or to discern between choices.

There are many reasons to find something like the pi interesting. There are also many reasons why the pi might not work for you. Having an alternative that might work better is a good thing, not bad.

Something isn't an "alternative" if it costs 5x as much. Would an automotive article comparing various cars pose a Maserati as an "alternative" to a Honda or Suburu? No, because that would be insulting to readers, and they'd stop buying the magazine.

@khamul -

This might be one of those times when automotive examples don't work well.

I agree -- a maserati makes a lousy alternative to a Honda, especially if you care about fuel economy.

And, if that $35 or so price point is critical, then the pi is what you need.

But there's a big difference between and extra $100 or so and an extra $60K.
