Are We There Yet?

So the big question for GNOME 3.4 is... are we there yet? Different people will define "there" differently, but I define "there" as "a welcome desktop environment for users who liked and used GNOME 2.x."

I think the answer is yes, but only with a bit of tweaking. If choosing a desktop for myself, I'd probably opt for the Cinnamon fork of GNOME 3.x for now.

...but this to me reads as a NO.

But I wouldn't be hesitant to put GNOME 3.4 on a desktop for a friend or family member at this point.

Hmm, not using this himself, but unleashing it on others.

Interesting. And timely.

Particularly significant is the alt-text:
Randall Munroe wrote:Umwelt is the idea that because their senses pick up on different things, different animals in the same ecosystem actually live in very different worlds. Everything about you shapes the world you inhabit--from your ideology to your glasses prescription to your web browser.
So, "are we there yet?" can have several different interpretations of "there". Dad thinks "our destination," Mom thinks "a quiet place away from the usual drag," the kids think "a new place to explore." And they all answer the question with "yes."

Ah. I wondered why I was still getting Friday's strip on Monday. One NoScript click later and I can see the real strip. Thanks.

Gus3,

Yes the truism of different positions in a structure leading to different realities. Not to get TOO philosophical but what always amazes me is that at times despite these obvious differences common humanity can be deeply communicated.

I won't dispute this. But there is something else going on in the article.

Mr. brockmeier states in the article that he won't use Gnome 3.4 and that means it is not there yet per his own definition. I define "there" as "a welcome desktop environment for users who liked and used GNOME 2.x." If he is going to use Gnome 3, it will be with Gnome 2 alike Cinnamon.

Yet he has no problem deciding that other people can use Gnome Shell as the successor to Gnome 2.x, completely disregarding the ideas and feelings of these people about Shell.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I don't autocratically subject other people to software that I myself am unwilling to use. I've shown Gnome Shell to family members and when they rejected it after trying it out, I didn't make the decision to declare it ready for them.

It still isn't ready, because the biggest reason to reject Gnome Shell in my family, is the Shell design that everything needs to be accessed through a fullscreen menu which requires an obtrusive view switch. No, putting minimally functional band-aids on top of Shell with extensions didn't cut the mustard either.
