and storing your data in the cloud away from your business might be a way to go. Except that the "cloud" is not some mythical place outside of reality. Data in the "cloud" is stored on very real harddrives, in a very real bladeserver, in a very real datacenter. It won't survive a massive magnitude 9 earthquake or a tsunami any better than your own server room. All the "cloud providers have multiple redundant systems" reassurances could be hollow. When the mighty dollar speaks, the temptation to overbook infrastructure is present. It won't be all cloud providers and it won't be completely without back-ups, but make sure your brilliant plans/inventions/ideas are not only found in the cloud. "Cloud" could be one option among others in a data safety plan. Don't use it as THE option in data safety. Plus, be aware of privacy issues. You have outsiders with the ability to peek into your data if they want to. (Or are compelled to by some TLA agency). |

I am a recent Amazon S3 customer and I mean aside from the ridiculously low price of light storage (20 bucks for 20 gigs in a year), I keep a 1 terabyte drive that syncs to it when I add stuff to "the cloud". That drive is only plugged in when I am uploading and then unplugged and placed in a cool dry place. The only thing I do not store within my Amazon account is my music. Much of it was, uh....acquired via torrent and GTK Gnutella and I don't want any hashes I forgot to strip being stumbled upon if it should ever by looked at. Some would argue that isn't redundant enough but I am thinking it is. |

Cloud isn't the big cost, data transfer is. It's not a trivial cost to move data back and forth across the web. |

Storage space is cheap. Broadband,... That's what's expensive, at least in the US... |

Quoting:Broadband,... That's what's expensive, at least in the US... Yeah, their concert tickets cost about $250 apiece. |
