Quoting: my default Ubuntu system: a 2009-era Gateway DX4710. This PC is powered by a 2.5-GHz Intel Core 2 Quad processor and has 6GBs of RAM and an Intel GMA (Graphics Media Accelerator) 3100 for graphics. No, it’s not fast...

What. The. Eff. Not fast? Just how powerful does a PC need to be? *headpound*

@TC.

No matter how fast, it is never enough for SJVN. :-)

Its a h#ll of a lot faster than my dual core athlon 64 s939 with just 2gb of ram, thank (insert deity de jour here) for xfce. Some folks just don't know how good they have it.

Lets do a PC version of the Monty Python, Four Yorkshiremen sketch

I'm glad I'm not the only one whose eyes were not popping out at the obvious. That being said Unity does look a lot more polished.

It's probably on par with my 2Gig quad core machine. True there are faster machines around, but calling such a machine slow is probably a little disingenuous.

As for Unity, Polished ugly is still ugly.

My netbook and my single core desktop seem fast enough running either SalixOS or Vector Linux with an XFCE or LXDE desktop. I guess I must be a Luddite or something for having such old, slow machines.

These days, I find the limiting factor with machine speed to usually be RAM, not CPU. Even with 5GB, I'm constantly running out of RAM. I think the fundamental problem, however, is memory leaks; you'd think after all this time application developers would have figured out how to conquer that problem.

What is consuming all the memory?

You had debuggers? Pfff, luxury! Why I remember having to debug core dumps on strips of paper, and code using a keyboard with only two keys, "1" and "0".

Don't laugh but the first computer I used in 1978 I had to use Fortran card decks punched on a card punch machine. The output would return the next day. I remember having to code very carefully. But it was a buzz for some reason.
