Now we just need to convince Nvidia to fix their proprietary driver so it uses KMS. The Nouveau developers' efforts are commendable, but unfortunately Nouveau still isn't even close to the proprietary driver for performance, and is utterly unusable for any 3D software. It's great that it actually runs 3D games (like TuxRacer) now; it couldn't even do that a year or two ago, but it's still too slow to be useful. I look forward to the day when Nouveau is as fast as the proprietary driver (or at least 75% as fast), because other than that it's much better since it uses KMS and actually fits into a Linux distro. |

So what is the problem with Nouveau development? Money? Lack of Devs? It seems like it's one of those projects that starts out like a house on fire then just seems to make piddling advancements. I'd say it is one of the most important projects in the Linuxphere. |

I can only guess, but I imagine there's a few problems, such as 1) lack of engineers knowledgeable about GPUs and how to write drivers for them, and 2) lack of documentation from Nvidia. |
