XBMC is great, but there are a number of problems :

1) Playback on non-nVidia graphics chipsets is sub-par at reasonably high resolution (what you'd get on most 40"+ TVs). Adding VLC as an external player is a pain.,

2) PVR/DVR function is not built in, except on the experimental branch,

3) TV playback (on supported tuner devices, like Hauppauge tuner cards or the HDhomerun) is not built in either, meaning you have a lot of hacking to do to get it to be your TV playback front end,

4) Support for voip, outside of Skype means a real hack job in adding it as a customized launcher option,... which is also a real pain, &

5) It's incompatible with Compiz, so you have to disable Compiz prior to running it.

Is this an alternative to MythTV? A subset of?

Alternative, as I understand it. I think XBMC is newer, and was originally developed to be used on Xboxes, but later became a more generalized media PC system. It really needs a rename.
