So check out this idea -

Lets start Gnome 3 with a bunch of great features Gnome 2 had missing.

Then every time one of these minor features gets added back in by default (or via extension) there is a news article about it. Free PR for awhile with all the features missing huh?

True. But, I don't think gnome is the only software doing it.

The thing is all these "features" skirt around the real problem... the whole GNOME 3 paradigm.

Hi Tracyanne, and a Happy New Year.......Two days ago, I temporarily loaded Ubuntu 11.04 onto a PC for formatting purposes. I have no idea what the Ubuntu DE was, but I suspect it was Ubuntu's version of Gnome called Unity ? - a line of buttons down one side. I played with it for about an hour and eventually gave up.......I had the feeling I was being asked to run software designed for a smartphone and I could not make head or tail of it, nor could I find the normal controls used to run a DE........Once bitten twice shy in my case, and Unity definitely does not appeal to me in any way. I don't especially like Gnome but at least Gnome is usable......Unity wasn't.

And a happy new year to you too.

I actually like the way Unity works from the point of view of a tablet, Ijust don't like it as a large screen mouse driven desktop. I don't like GNOME 3 Shell in that format either.

On the other hand Pear OS Panther does look rather interesting.

As someone who owns 6~ tablets I can say Unity isn't all that great on them either.

tracyanne - And you have used Unity on a tablet when exactly to draw this conclusion?? Unity on a Tablet is a terrible idea, people hold tablets with 2 hands, so what, your going to have to reach over to your other hand where the Unity panel is to select anything and probably drop the tablet while your at it? Considering most people are right handed, they would use their right hand to reach over. Things need to be near the bottom of the screen on tablets.

I own 2 tablets and Unity wouldn't work at all on them, it would make for the most frustrating experience ever which is why we are all using Android and something else hasn't come along and taken over yet because Android nailed it. Anything which is going to stand any chance on tablets is going to have to provide a better interface than Android does, and Unity is definitely not it!

Unity doesn't even work on a netbook let alone a tablet! the vertical screen space is too small and you can only get 5-6 icons in view on the panel, tablets have the same resolution as netbooks. Netbook remix had the right idea, at least that had potential.

@fatriff I haven't actually. It just seemed designed for tablets, as it doesn't seem designed for mouse and keyboard style desktops.

From what I'm seeing here. It seems it's just poor design.

I don't know who or what or why they are going down this road, it's clearly not what users want or they wouldn't already have a tweak to move the Unity panel to the bottom of the screen, there is a tweak already for basically everything which will return Unity or Shell back into a Gnome 2 style interface. If these interfaces were working, people wouldn't be doing this. It seems every article about Unity or Shell focuses on what tweaks or add-ons you should install after you have installed the desktop to make it more usable... But shouldn't it be more usable in the 1st place??

I used Gnome shell for months and immediately it was apparent that this isn't going to work and I need a bottom panel to switch open tasks then along came the bottom panel just as I'd wanted. Installed it, was happy for a couple of days then another thing started bugging me.. Now I have this panel at the bottom, why do I even need the activities area? It's stupid to have both. So I've got this thing in the corner of my screen which says Activities which I no longer need to visit. Just 1 theme change and 1 extension and everything Gnome Shell has tried to do is undone and I have what looks like Gnome 2.

So we have this situation where you've got 2 companies trying to implement change and the user-base desperately trying to fight back by finding ways to undo all of these changes. Something has to give or this can't work.

Just a quick question:

I see more and more touch screen monitors in my local stores. I don't know anybody who actually has one of these, but just how common are they now?
