Someone once asked Marshall McLuhan how he had managed to predict the future so well. He replied that he hadn't in fact predicted the future at all -- but merely looked around, and described clearly what he saw already happening all around him. I think that this characterization might apply almost as well to Richard Stallman's propositions. It's just that today, for whatever reason, people are much less willing to consider the message and more resistant to accepting the implications. |
