It's not really what I want

What I want is something like dropbox or Ubuntu One, but which I operate from my own server.

I already have my contacts in a database, in an encrypted folder, accessible from Evolution. So I have no need of the contacts database that comes with own cloud, and there appears to be no way I can share a folder in my home directory with the server, at least not the way DropBox and Ubuntu One work, and probably every other proprietary cloud service of this type. The WebDAV access from Nautilus doesn't allow that.

Also I have a calendar in Eveolution, and I don't need a web interface for playing my music. All I need is a folder I can share between my computers, where ever they are, but I prefer not to use Ubuntu One or Dropbox, but instead want to use a server I control.

The developers of owncloud appear to have gone out of their way to develop something that is not what other people want, or anything like what other people use.

But.... but... but... if it's on a server that you control, how am I supposed to charge you whatever the market will bear, for access to your own data or for "special" features???

I take what I wrote back. It is possible to do what you can with Ubuntu One and DropBox etc. It's just not obvious, or, currently, easy.

this page http://owncloud.org/use/webdav/ shows how.

Apparently there is a client being developed for this. But I've managed to do it following the instructions.

whoo hoo a cloud I control.

Thank you for the link -- I've got that bookmarked now. I may want to play around with that, too.

@TA,

It is still at its early stages of development.

If you haven't submitted your wish list yet, may be you can do that here like others did and who have similar concerns/requests. Also here to join their chat room.

Neat. I may have to take a look. Thanks.

Having mounted owncloud, using the instructions given, I copied a bunch of files I'd like to be able to share between computers. The copy ent fine, but when I opened the copied folders the files contained within were all zero bytes in size. At first I thought it was because I was copying the encrypted files, so I started again with the unencrypted files, and the same thing happened.

Hummmmm. Had the same problem with Minus.com. Everything I load ends up zero bytes and won't display or download. Obviously Minus is nothing but an empty stomach for data.

Can anyone explain why WebDAV is better than SSHFS?

I read there's something with locking, updating files and such, does it mean WebDAV is aimed at 'more people working in the same directory'?

When reading up upon WebDAV I found one old client called 'cadaver', which makes me doubt the mental sanity of some of the people working on it...

I'm not particularly happy with the OwnCloud developers, so far. I posted to their mailing list. The only place I could find to post a bug report, about the zero byte file issue. So far not a single enquirey about the issue. Lots of other emails from the mailing list, mostly about what they expect to do at some confereence, but nothing regarding my issue.

At TA....

Silly you....as a user, you actually had an expectation of receiving some attention?

If it makes anyone feel better, I did the same thing with Minus and got ignored as well.....at least to this point. I am thinking three weeks is well out of sight of any dev's rear view mirror.

So... let me ask the question.

In that OwnCloud/Minus business model, who are the actual customers?

(Clearly not you.)

I finally tracked down the proper place to send bug reports, I had to be somewhat rude on the mailing list, but someone got back to me and directed me to the proper Bug reporting channel. So now we shall see, I suppose.

Unfortunately ownCloud is of no use to me if it continues to behave the way it is on my machine. It's a pitty because it looks like the sort of thing I want.

I am a "potential" customer if I find value in expanding my storage needs past their 10 gig free offering. They are not doing them selves any favors by screwing up the first impression of their service.

I can't help wondering what sort of "conversion rate (not being a business school/marketing grade, I'm guessing at the terminology) would they need to break even.

But then, I don't even have any idea how much Facebook would make off of me or my friends, either...

Me neither. But you know what I mean.

(I might join up under an alias to be able to access some forums or whatever they call them. If only to be able to read announcements.

Well so far no response to my bug report, not even a request for more information, apparently 5 people have viewed it, and I know 3 of those were me.

One response to my bug report, from another person with a similar bug, the only time anyone who might be a developer has shown any interest in any similar bug reports is to talk down to the the person reporting the bug.

By way of comparison there is a lot of emails flying between the developers on the mailing list, none of them mention the bugs reported, only new features.

Tonido is your own personal cloud: http://www.tonido.com/ - been around years longer than owncloud. Have an old PC? Install it there and you're set.

You can also try a Pogoplug: http://www.pogoplug.com/products.html - it's not too bad...but I like Tonido better because I control everything...even the hardware :)

Thanks for posting the links, I never heard of Tonido. It seems to be a perfect peer to peer for personal use. I haven't notice any where if it is open source or not, is it?

I finally got a response from someone who might be a developer, probably in response to my compalining on the "bug list", so I did as he asked and copied files to the test server. In the process I commented on each test I did. I go in this morning and all my files have disappeared, and half my comments in the bug list are missing.

Mind you it's an odd bug list, you are awarded "badges" every time you make a comment on the list, quite strange. I don't want a "badge" I want something useful done.

@ Fettoosh, Tonido is proprietary, it has a free (no cost) version and a Pro (the commercial) version that you pay for, which has additional features and capabilities.
