I've been using non-ISP DNS since the late 90's when I found out (due to a friend testing for me) that our DSL provider's DNS servers were dropping every 15 min on average. And of course this was back when DSL was pretty new and "fast" at 768k/128k. I used to have my local dns server go straight to the root servers, but these days I have it go through OpenDNS for the speed, reliability, and filtering options.

I use OpenDNS as well and I see it came out fastest in the namebench test.

The speed that OpenDNS delivers depends on the country that you are staying in. I have used namebench test at least a 100 times. Most of the times OpenDNS comes in as 50% slower than the local ones. It also has happened on occasion it was the fastest.

For me, having to go through a local bottleneck makes opendns a nono
