@TA, thanks for posting this. I don't have a lot to add but it will be interesting to see how things work out. I haven't quite forgiven the publisher for the attitude they copped a while back, but that's just me. The statement about bing.com running on Linux caught my attention. This reminds me of Microsoft's purchase of Hotmail back when. I hadn't given any thought to what server OS Bing was running on. The only reason I use Bing is for the Bird's Eye View in the maps. I have used that and Google's street view to good advantage on occasion. |

Quoting:"Microsoft's Bing search engine is mostly hosted on Linux, through Akamai." So it looks like that Bing actually runs on Windows -- which would certainly still be a sign of how much Windows has improved since the Hotmail farce. If Bing does actually run on Linux, I would love to hear about it... |

Am I missing something there? |

I expect "hosted on Linux" is somewhat different from "running on Linux". http://uptime.netcraft.com/up/graph?site=bing.com shows bing.com shows the OS to be F5 Big-IP and the server UNKNOWN. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F5_Networks says this: "F5's BIG-IP product is based on a network appliance (either virtual or physical), which runs F5's Traffic Management Operating System (TMOS), which runs on top of Linux." Thus, "hosted on" Thank you, Bernard. I would have remained unaware of F5 and its services had you not spurred me to take a look. |
