A slashdot blogger that goes by the name of hairyfeet made this statement, and yes, in print and on the-internet-is-forever side of things

Linux also hasn't improved in the past two years, he added: "Drivers are just as buggy, upgrades still kill hardware, waaaay too many things are tied to what kernel version you have, and the whole thing is filled to the brim with zealots that act like you kicked a puppy if you dare to point out what is wrong.

I've installed thousands upon thousands of computers with Linux and I can count on one hand and part of another the times I've encountered problems such as this.

The zealot part...I cannot argue with. I used to be one, and there is no one as dangerous as a True Believer.

Mr. hairyfeet might want to take that into consideration.

As far as his technical observations, he has got to be talking from 2001 or before. If not, he is uninformed and as dumb as a dungbag.

@Helios, just when I thought it was safe to go back into the water. I have to inform you that Mr. hairyfeet is not as dumb as a dung bag :)

His perspective seems to come from his own problems when he went off half-cocked with his own slapdash experiment in selling Linux desktop systems.

Here is the story in his own words... http://www.linuxinsider.com/perl/board/mboard.pl?board=lnita...

In my opinion, instead of learning from his mistakes (which were in the circumstances, understandable), he blames them on Linux, for doing things differently than Windows does...

@ Ken...he's probably not....He's written some fairly intelligent things in the past.

but when he makes statements that are absolutely wrong and readily proved wrong on a grand scale... He doesn't leave us with many options to choose from. Just sayin'.

I've easily sold a couple hundred Linux Desktop systems and I haven't had a service call of any sort, hardware OR software outside of a blown power supply in over a year. My strong advice to my customers and our HeliOS kids...if it ain't broke, don't try to fix it until it is, and that firmly includes Kernel upgrades. Upgrading a Kernel for the sake of upgrading can be trouble. If users of Windows had the option of updating their Kernels, I imagine my onsite repair business would be grossing six digits. If more novice Linux Users and Novice Linux Desktop sales people passed that little nugget of information along, it might be helpful in the long run. We've got people still running Mepis 6 with no problems at all.

@helios:

Just a point of protocol, but have you passed word of this to the Mepis folks? Reports like that are what keeps a hacker's ego properly stroked.

@gus3: Mepis 6.5 here (with a Mepis 8.0 box sitting next to it), and no, they're more "Why aren't you running 11? Don't you know that the Dapper Drake on which 6.5 is based ceased even init-3-level updates half a year ago?" Well, maybe it's because 8.5 and 11.0 are KDE4-based and I'd rather get some work done...

I think you have his number on this one. There's a reason that I'm not the owner of an X86 tablet business, selling Linux tablets at iPad killer prices,... You can't get standards out of the Chinese wholesalers. The ones who do give you complete specs, will change them on the next hardware run. But most of them won't tell you what parts are actually in their products. So, I'm not surprised at the results he had. But, he should have been smarter, in the beginning.

@Helios, apologies, I made a crude remark although it may not have been obvious.In the end, however, I think we can agree that intelligence alone is not enough.
