A great perspective from an "outsider" (if you will) as to the issues of moving to Linux (or lack thereof).

What comes out clearly is not that Linux is difficult to use, but that natively, the applications that she used were not available for Linux. It's all very well to say that there are alternatives, if you are used to something that you use in your job and you have used it all your life, it is a BIG disincentive to make the move.

it is a BIG disincentive to make the move.

We've talked about this before here...it all comes down to pain threshold. I equate it to a bad tooth. Sure it hurts but you also know that the trip to the dentist will compound the pain for a while. We all know how much better it feels to have it taken care of but facing it is what keeps the makers of toothache medicine in business.

The trio are pretty good articles. I sent them to a friend's son who is going to Berkeley to pursue his graduate studies in journalism.

Over last weekend, he happened to ask me why his dad's computer has Linux instead of Windows. Well, he got a brief lecture and these articles for details.

Randi's comments and criticisms of Libre/OpenOffice is apt I think. Until the spreadsheet solution can stand format changes between .XLT and open standards with complex tables or graphics, I think it will tarnish the overall reputation of Linux at least within the student body. She's right about the spreadsheet looking like a bomb went off in it when saved in XLT and opened on a MS Office computer.

To be fair, Microsoft still has problems with the same thing when different releases of MS Office are used. "But there's a plugin for that" might be the answer but how many users actually know how to go search for a plugin or if there even is one?

Just seems to me that when it happens in a Windows environment, it is just part of using the system but when it happens in Linux, then Linux sucks.

Going from Office 2003 to 2007 is a fiasco. I think it's actually easier to switch from '03 to OO.org than just making the M$ switch...
