I confess to using a Motorola "clam-shell" phone with actual buttons for the numbers.....It is soooo "not with it" I suppose, but since it does exactly what I want ~ be a mobile phone ~ I treasure it, and dread the fact that it might curl up and die on me some day. So far, perfect in every way. I've used the camera once I think, and my biggest horror is having to reply to the very rare text messages I get - I can never figure out how to use the blasted thing.....but apart from that I guess I am a "phone luddite". If I want a computer, I'll buy one, not a smart phone - well, not yet anyhow.

Nonetheless, I drop into the Telstra mobile phone shops occasionally and check the offerings and get some info from one particular friendly salesman. Elop might be interested to know that Android phones are selling like hot cakes and smart phones with Windows move very slowly. The comments from at least two separate stores, one in my area and one in the state capital of Brisbane, is that the kids simply don't want Windows on their phones - they want Android. Elop has a huge barrier to overcome and I suspect the train has already left the station.

On an oblique matter, I also thoroughly enjoy asking each new mobile-phone salesman that I meet the same question: "How do you enjoy using Linux ?" Without exception, a look of utter puzzlement spreads on their faces and finally you extract the idea that they know it is an operating system but they know nothing of it. When they get told that they are using Linux all the time with Android you can see the dawn breaking and they admit freely that it is so easy to use and works so well. How I wish the Android people would also put that little penguin on the phones as well.....betcha the Windows symbol appears on every Win-phone. However, again, I suspect Elop has been left standing on the platform watching the train disappear in the distance......No wonder the patent claims are now rising against Android - you can't have a free and open market place you know.

I miss my lovely little Motorola clamshell. Did everything I needed -- even hooked to the internet vi EDGE.

I've got an older Blackberry now -- without a data plan.

I've grown accustomed to it, though am bugged by the possibility of butt-dialing people if I don't lock the keyboard before putting it into my pocket.

A real keyboard is a big deal to me, and it makes texting pretty easy. Heck -- the phone has wi-fi, so I can even go online anywhere there's a hot spot, which is pretty much everywhere.

I maybe forced to get an android, however. I have an app that supports field technicians and I get paid for it. Expanding to new clients may require being more smart phone friendly (HTML5, my friends -- not going to do phone specific development) and that will mean getting something akin to what clients want to use.

Sigh.
