Looks like they designed it to keep rocket diameter to a minimum. That makes sense from a low-cost standpoint, I'd guess. If I read "Chariots for Apollo" correctly, the prone position of 60s-era US space capsules was mainly to allow survival of landing shocks. Lots of knowledge, both structural, dynamic and physiological has been acquired since 1960, so a more-or-less upright position might not be that harmful. The realy danger is probably from a large explosion below the capsule, and I doubt that a prone or erect position would matter much for that eventuality. |

I believe the design is open source,... meaning anyone may replicate it. Oh,... and the problem with a vertical pilot orientation is compressive force on the spine/neck. Nobody would want to take a lot of trips in that thing. Otherwise, you'd be like a fighter pilot who ejected one to many times. |
