- Enlarge icons. On a 24" screen, the icons will be a full 2" x 2".

- Enlarge text. On a 24" screen, the text will be a minimum of 0.5" in height (not sure what that translates to in point size)

- No more multiple desktops/workspaces. You don't need them, and they're just confusing.

- No more "start" or program launcher menus. To run a program, you'll just click on the icon for it. Every installed program will have an icon on the desktop.

- No more windows. When you run an application, it runs in full-screen mode only. This eliminates the need for maximize and minimize buttons. To get out of an application and get to the desktop, you'll press the Escape key, which will close the app entirely and bring you back to the desktop screen with icons.

- No more multitasking or switching between apps. You don't need to do this, and it's confusing to many users.

- 11.10 will ship with a special version of Firefox which has confusing features removed. For instance, there will no navigation bar, or a way to directly type in a website's URL, as that's too confusing. Instead, you'll be directed to Ubuntu's search portal, and will have to start all web searches from there.

There are some good ideas though, I like the software changes and the LightDM looks interesting. It's good to make Ubuntu more lightweight too with just one desktop environment, I could always modify the ISO to add in Gnome. There is Kubuntu which I prefer, but 11.04 is released with slightly buggy KDE SC release.

I'd be surprised if there aren't growing Kubuntu and Mint users due to these changes.

So they have Kubuntu (KDE), Xubuntu (Xfce) and Lubuntu (LXDE). When/where is GNOMEbuntu, or even GNOME2Buntu?

Somebody must be doing this, and if Canonical doesn't, they're nuts.

Grishnakh,

Just a simple statement: I am the registered humorist at LXer that milks the seemingly straight tech. market droid statements for their ironic and ridiculous consequences to give readers (perhaps*) a few chuckles. I think you are trampling on my turf (astro, of course).

Onto the questions, will the 24" tablet arrive in time and this greatest Ubuntu to use?

I just am certain the battery life will be phenomenal, however, will this necessitate one be a professional body builder to carry the device for any realistic period or distance?

Will the airlines require one to buy an extra seat if one is seated in the economy/third class section or will an upgrade to first class seating and pricing be another, easier alternative?

However, if your list of great leaps forward were not uttered with a skewed pen and are instead serious statements of perceived break throughs in human/computer interface design - I am glad I jumped to Mint. And an observation, that just perhaps the Ubuntu group is becoming too isolated to take any outside, serious assessment of their ideas.

[said with utmost sincerity and seriousness]

tmx, you are unequivocally stepping on my turf.

tmx, when I hear that I think of a sporty vehicle design ... a two seater if European or a two door coupe with a tight fit in the back that should hold only groceries or a limited set of children if built for North American tastes. Is that how you see your alias?

[/turn off whatever this section's tone happens to be]

Just for reference: One inch has 72 points. So, 1/2" text is about 36 points, plus whatever leading between the descenders and ascenders.

Google "disagreeably facetious type glossary" and follow the link to teh Evil Empyre for a very good, and memorable, explanation of typography terminology. But I certainly won't provide a link here, lest I be rightly branded a heretic.
