CentOs is not a grandchild of RHEL

It is RHEL with different trademarks. Otherwise they are identical. Red Hat and MS have technical agreements to support some of each other's virtual machine and cloud implementations. So MS saying they support CentOs in these cloud technologies is a no-brainer since the two differ by only the trademark images in a single directory. It would be nice if the media would get its facts straight instead of just troll for hits. |

Sigh. Red Hat Linux has proprietary programs. CentOS replaces those programs with Open Source equivalents. CentOS is not simply a re-branding of Red Hat Linux. |

@Gus3 There are proprietary options for RHEL that many sites contract for. But the basic RHEL is the same as CentOS. More important is that CentOs binaries are 100% compatible with RHEL. The proprietary options do not in any way affect that the basic genetics of the two operating systems are identical and that was my point. Thanks for helping clarify that. |

There is a poison pill.. The "support" is only available if you want to migrate your centos machines to virtual hosts on windoze peecee servers. Yikes. |

Quoting:Red Hat Linux has proprietary programs. CentOS replaces those programs with Open Source equivalents. Sorry, gus, but that just isn't true. Red Hat Linux has proprietary programs. CentOS replaces those programs with Open Source equivalents. Proprietary add-ons to RHEL come on a separate iso or can be purchased separately. RHEL itself is entirely FOSS. CentOS, Scientific Linux and PUAIS are all just Red Hat source code with logos and branding stripped out, compiled from Red Hat source. Nothing is left out. Usual disclaimer: I did consulting work for Red Hat in 2005. I am not currently affiliated with the company in any way. |

Count me properly chastised. I am now more informed. Thanks, caitlyn. |
