That was a rather good intro. I wish I'd seen one as good a decade or so ago, when I was learning to set up PPP on my very first Linux box, and learning how to argue with ISP "script-kiddies" over minor details like whether or not the real problem with my internet access was that I needed to use a "real" operating system.

There's a rather nice little tool that I like, called mtr, which combines the features of of ping and traceroute. I generally reach for it before ping or traceroute.

The cli version without the gui may be packaged as mtr-tiny. According to the man page, the GUI version/front-end uses Gtk, but it appears I've never found cause to bother with installing it (or if I ever did, I still never bothered to use it.)
