Biggest difference between Ubuntu/Debian and Fedora?

For me the biggest difference is that in Ubuntu, Debian (and OpenBSD), the first user account created by the system gets UID 1000, whereas in Fedora and Red Hat, the first user account is UID 500. When you move your files from your backup after changing distros (I use rsync to do this), you have to chgrp everything recursively. It's a pain. And yes, Red Hat should change. |

I checked, and Slackware also starts the user id's at 1000. |

Just pick a UID for yourself, and make sure you get the same UID on "your" systems. It helps NFS to work properly. Mine is 12346. |
