Oh boy: A perfect segue to relate one of my favorite "Rich Stallman" stories. When RMS came to talk to Cabrillo College in Aptos, California (Santa Cruz County) in 2008 or 2009 (I can't remember when), I had the pleasure of driving him around. He was on a local radio program called GeekSpeak one Saturday morning, and my friend Rick Fillman (who answers the phones for the call-in) met us at the bottom of the stairs. "This is Rick," I said to RMS, or so I thought. RMS indignantly says: "I go by Richard." "No," I said, "This (pointing to Fillman) is Rick. Rick, Richard Stallman." So I have to laugh whenever someone refers to Stallman as "Rick" or "Rich" or "Dickie" (a reference I know one Southwestern FOSS advocate likes to make) or anything other than Richard. |
