I've learned to wait until at least version + .1 before I grab some kind of new release (usually +1 month for Linux distros). I almost jumped onto the Android tablet bandwagon but thought better of it for now. Too many of them decided to shoehorn 2.2 or later instead of waiting for 3.0. There will still be a need for developers to leverage the new APIs and make apps that work great on tablets.

And then there's the new dual-cores...

I always wait for the first adopters to pay for future development. During that time, other devices enter the market and by the time the third gen devices hit the market, you have an even-money chance of purchasing a decent product.

Although, I was sorely temped with the Samsung Galaxy...

If you are halfway OK around "hacking," consider a Nationite MIDnite (aka WitsTech A81e or A81g). Cortex A8 processor, flash-able, running Android 2.2, not perfect, but pretty nice. < $250 US.
