I'm surprised the differences are that large.

Hopefully, the Open64 compiler is GPL, so the best working parts can be cross-pollinated with the others.

If hardware had not advanced as quickly as it has, compiler optimization would have been a higher priority. A 10% improvement in code speed just isn't worth the cost of developers when a 50% improvement in hardware speed is just an upgrade away.

The endless hand-tweaking of code by professional systems administrators in the mainframe days comes to mind.

I think the distributed nature of F/OSS development is wonderful, everyone works on what interests them most. And filthy slobs who couldn't code their way out of a paper bag, like me, benefit.
