I suppose an ipad could be used in a pinch

And for the apple fanboys that would be simply delightful, I'm sure.

But I'm bettin' that an android tablet would be a better tool for the job and offer more functionality at a lower price.

Well, actually I have yet to find a real x server for android. There are a few for iOS, so they have an advantage.

@jimbauwens -

Good point - X11 support would definitely be nice to have but then again I suppose with the availability of vnc etc it's not really a show stopper -

Well, you have allot better performance with xdmcp then with vnc. Your phone is then really a thin client. I have android phone, and have some utilities like ssh and vnc clients, but I'm really missing that X server ;-)

I think iPad's make great paperweights...the most expensive paperweights known to man...but good ones nonetheless.

Well, I disagree, the iPad is very useful, works good, does what you want, and most apps are great. I just don't like how closed it is. It is very useful, and currently there is no android tablet that beats it. I tried different tablets, including the galaxy tab, and none off them works as good and as smooth as the iPad. Of course others will come, like the Notion Ink Adam tablet, which looks like it will beat the iPad. But currently, no, the iPad is the best tablet.

That is a contradiction.

Depends what your metric is. I have an Android ereader that I picked up for $120. It does everything I want for $120. The iPad won't do everything I want because Apple won't give me permission.

Yes, that is wrong written, it should be "it does what most people want". What I mean is, the software is very good designed, and so is the hardware. Of course there will be apps that android has and iOS not, but so has iOS applications that android doesn't have. And in my opinion, most iOS applications are better build that android applications. Maybe this is because of Apples app store rules. My point is just, iPad's are not paperweight, and they can be very useful.

I dislike Apple, but I'm not going to deny it when they have something good. And I personly prefer android over iOS though, for the same reason as you, but for most people iOS is a better choice.

I'm actually a bit wrong in the above post. I write "but for most people iOS is a better choice". And I disagree myself with that. I think I'm getting crazy. I just really depends on what you need and for what you use it. Well, my point is, an iPad is not paperweight :-)

I think if an iPad causes someone to disagree with oneself, one should better not used it at all, even not as a paperweight!

I had a headache, and a bit of a cold. This made me a bit unfocused :-)

@jimbauwens - I think the ipad is really cool, don't get me wrong. I'm not going to insult your intelligence by claiming that it's crap.

I'm just saying that, as cool as it is, when there is an equivalent linux powered device (apparently many such devices are on the way) I will pick the linux powered device every time.

@herzeleid: I did not take this as a insult, don't worry :-) I also will prefer the linux powered device. And btw, did you know the iPad can run Linux: http://hexxeh.net/?p=328117605 and http://hexxeh.net/?p=328117620.

Very interesting... but then again, no doubt frowned upon by Steve Jobs :/

Yes, Steve Jobs is a little weird, as he says that to be able to use 7 inch Tablets, you will have to sand your fingers with some sand paper .... what about the iPod Touch and the iPhone?
