We are already watching the "makeover of the stock exchanges" because New York has moved, and the London Stock Exchange continues to move to Linux based software to achieve better speed, stability and security........I wonder if this action by the Hong Kong Jockey Club might have a similar flow-on ? I know nothing about the racing world, but it's a tempting hypothesis - or perhaps I am just hopeful.

Probably, more organizations move to Linux but don't tell.

I've read stories of how Microsofts Sales department jumps on any party which mentions switching to Linux. Ballmer personally went to Munich. So if you want Linux but no Ballmer-visit, migrate but don't tell!

For sure Hkwint, as far as I know, what you have stated actually happened here in Australia and with Telstra, one of our major telephone companies. Apparently, the "bosses" at Telstra were all set to begin the move to Linux several years ago.......There was a frantic dash out here by Ballmer & Co (I'm told - though it might be just tinsel on the edges of the story - that Ballmer even interrupted his golfing schedule to make the dash to Australia)........and guess what ? Windows is still the default mess that Telstra keeps trying to keep running.....One can only wonder what palms were greased and in what ways. We will never know unfortunately.

2003 to be exact, I was working there then. There was a move to replace the .NET stack with a Java stack.

When Ballmer went to Munich he had to interrupt his skiing-vacation. Poor bloke can never have a true holiday!

Hans,

As the Brits would say: Spot On!, because that was exactly the situation I experienced. Read about it first and later found out internally it was true.

[serioius this time] [note to self, don't make this a common practice]

We run a Microsoft IIS server with lots of VBscript. That runs well enough, but it's no Apache, that's for sure.

Therein lies your biggest problem.

It could also be intentional. Company X wants to pay less for IT. They make a stink about switching to Linux. Balmer & co. fly in, offfering huge discounts on Windows and Office. And voila, X save a ton of money.
