Bruce Byfield wrote a review of Ubuntu Netbook Remix. Guess what kids? It's a pretty negative review overall. It doesn't matter that I completely agree with it. I am not an Ubuntu fanatic.

The fans are coming. Mark my words. They'll be out with their torches and pitchforks ready to skew Bruce Byfield's "bias", point out that he is obviously a clueless idiot for not loving Ubuntu, and in general they will say how wonderful they find Ubuntu and therefore it is absolutely wonderful.

Excellent job of creating a caricature, then attacking the caricature to show how very cosmopolitan we are. Give the ubuntu community a break already.

hey hertzeleid, We agree that Ubuntu's certainly a high and mighty Linux distro. OTOH, I just don't think there's NEARLY enough promotion of Ubuntu by word-of-mouth or by number of online postings such as those here at LXer ;) Let's both of us keep on mentioning Ubuntu to the near-exclusion of any other FLOSS developments, shall we? /severe sarcasm/ 2c

@herzeleid: No, considering my experiences with the Ubuntu community whenever I have written any criticism of that distro, no matter how mild, I will NOT give them a break. Considering the comments Bruce Byfield has already received I believe my comments are appropriate.

resistance is useless, ubuntoids are linux's mactards. Logic and facts are meaningless, metrics of any sort are meaningless.

Kind of like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FL7yD-0pqZg (insert language warning here)

In fairness, the fanatics are a small minority of the Ubuntu community. A loud, obnoxious minority like fanatics in any community, but still a small minority.

Gee thanks. Now I'm a 'tard. I'll refrain from countering your insult.

Quoting:We agree that Ubuntu's certainly a high and mighty Linux distro.
Whee, another caricature. I'm not sure what all is implied by that - as to whether it's high and mighty, who knows? but ubuntu is my distro of choice. (and starting with SLS in 1993 I've used a lot of them)

The caricature may or may not be valid. But one thing is certain. the Netbook desktop is incredibly restrictive, it looks and feels like a mobile phone desktop, adn I don't think that's work well on a larger screen 7 inch and over. For a company that's not making a mobile desktop (Canonical have denied that they are) they are doing a pretty good job of it.

look closer herz, if you choose to lump yourself in with the crowd thats your call, I called you nothing of the sort.

one thing I will call you on is your misuse of caricature http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/caricature

@azerthoth - of course I lump myself in with the ubuntu users - it's my distro of choice after all - and yeah, I meant caricature - a caricature of the ubuntu community is frequently portrayed by certain members here, who pretend with a straight face that it's an accurate portrayal.

I have to say, it's made this forum a hostile environment for ubuntu users.

Pardon me, but no. It is, as I said, an accurate portrayal of a loud MINORITY of Ubuntu users. Nobody placed you in that minority, herzeleid. Nobody painted all Ubuntu users with a broad brush. What I did accurately portray is my own experience with that minority. Would you like some links?

Well, until now, all comments on this article (about 5 of them) seems to be polite and are about the content.

It seems the Ubooligans - if they ever existed - haven't arrived yet.

It's the Garlic and Witch hazel I've strung around the perimeter, that stopped them.

Whenever there is some article like this about Ubuntu you goes on defensive mode and proclamation even though the Ubuntu mass haven't attacked you yet.

Anyway, I dislike Ubuntu idea of going with Unity by default as well. But I have to see what Ubuntu 11 is like. If Unity doesn't work well then I would recommend Debian 6 to my friends instead, if it is even released by then.

I think all of the communities tend to have a small group of elitism, even Linux Mint and Debian (as I has been shown by previous posts.)

For the record, no one yelled at me in real life for using Windows yet.

Did I say ubuntu users? hmmm nope, again your really working at trying to be insulted. I'll let you if you want to be, but make sure that you actually were first.

And no, caricature requires exaggeration, do you deny the lockstep jobsian devotion? Do you deny the cries of heresy that rise against any negative comment?

For the independent researcher, a suggested starting point is to search for "caitlyn martin ubuntu o'reilly" on Google. As of this writing, links #1 and #4 are interesting, to say the least.

And that's probably all I'll say on this thread.

I have a pitchfork, but not a flaming torch. However I do have a big burn pile for my Thanksgiving bonfire. Does that count? :D
