DigiKam doesn't appear to be on the list

FSpot is listed as on the applications list, but not DigiKam. That makes no sense, as digiKam is a native KDE application while FSpot is truely horrible and it's not a KDE application. |

If you have read any of falko's "Perfect Desktop" series you will notice he has a personal preference for Gnome applications and will install them in place of, in this case native KDE applications. In addition his list of applications he installs during these how to's does not change between distro's. Granted this is what's so great about Linux - the ability to create what you want/require and not be stuck with what the distro is packaged with. That said, I would prefer if he would focus on the native applications of a distro. I do however like the series of screenshots. |

Agree, there's a standard list of applications, but an explanation of why _those_ apps were chosen (years ago when HowToForge was founded it seems?) lacks. The goal seems to be, have some applications for about any common desktop task, and have an integrated desktop. But when it comes to accounting for why certain apps are chosen, well, the website doesn't provide for that. Of course, this has been noted before, as there are people who don't want Mono-stuff on their PC. Not to rehassle that discussion, but just sayin', you're not the only one with questions about the list of apps chosen. Maybe it's a good idea to ask Falko if he feels there's any reason to update the list? Apps which were the best choice a few years ago, don't have to be the best choice today. |
