The article is interesting in that it cites a "spam gang", Bulker.biz, taht focuses on Linux or Unix-like boxes. Well how about them apples?

But it's even more interesting that Ron Guillaimette is involved. He used to be (circa 1995) a consultant who provided stress-tests for C (maybe C++) compilers. By about the 2nd round of Usenet spamming, he went totally off his rocker, doing everything he could to try to stop usenet spam. He has to be counted as a casualty of Spam, I think. It's good that he's turned his obsession into a steady income, and it's also good that he's using his powers for Good, not Evil, but it's a crying shame that people get driven around the bend by Spam and Spammers.

The Register on the same incident: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/10/14/microsoft_confirms_i...

Quoting:Also notable, according to Krebs, the machines that were compromised were running Linux.
Saying it's "notable" that the compromised systems were running Linux, implies an admission that compromised Microsoft systems aren't notable, but instead par for the course.

And here's Krebs himself on the attack: http://krebsonsecurity.com/2010/10/pill-gang-used-microsofts...

I still don't see any evidence that any linux machines were "hacked". Far more likely is that the folks at microsoft had these linux boxes misconfigured as open relays.
