Starting in the command line, I got the error "[00000332] access_mms access error: no data received" so it might not just be me.

Does anyone have it working for them?

I tested it on Ubuntu and it works fine....what distro you using? Also, if you are not using Ubuntu, did you install correct package from the download page keeping in mind your installed VLC version? The application needs VLC installed on your system to work.

Well, the title could have been better for the article thats for sure, I would have substituted streaming for live. As for the TV part ... since a capture card is not in the mix, that part is debatable too. Streaming media != TV. Tieing it to VLC is another questionable move. For the end user, VLC usually does a bang up job for play back, however they have a real hard time keeping from breaking API or even documenting year + old changes.

Yep. VLC 8.6 as in Debian Lenny, which they even had a .deb for, which I used.

I guess TVU in a WinXP virtual box will have to suffice.

I was interested to see lots of "mms:" in the list, which leads me to think that maybe XINE can do the streaming directly rather than going through Freetux at all...

Thats right. If they made all the mms links public, no one will use freetuxtv made by much of their hard work. Also, try upgrading VLC version if you can. I am not much aware about Debian Lenny but there should be some way to upgrade VLC because I think 8.6 is bit older version.

Excellent idea. If a different tool works better, I will use it.

It's on the Freetux list.

Quoting:If they made all the mms links public, no one will use freetuxtv ...
sounds suspiciously like a justification for lock in argument.
