. . . and waits for the "You Hate Ubuntu, $BLOGGER" folks to come in and pick apart an otherwise well written and informative article.

The last thread you describe was about an article over the issue of syndicating Mark Shuttleworth's blog on Planet Gnome and how much Ubuntu contributes upstream to Gnome. The whole thing was largely a tempest in a teapot. Canonical clearly has engineers on staff who write code which is released under the GPL which means they do give back by definition. How valuable their contributions are or how much they should contribute upstream are valid topics for discussion but really, when it comes down to it, is including a blog on an aggregator page really a big issue? I think not.

The issue of the contributor agreement that Bruce Byfield raises in this article and by Aaron Seigo at http://aseigo.blogspot.com/2010/09/copyright-assignments-gon... (which Bruce Byfield links) are major ones that raise real issues about how Canonical sees itself in context to FOSS as a whole and how it treats volunteers who contribute code. The comments on Mark Shutlleworth's blog by Jeff Spaleta which Bruce Byfield refers to and also the comments by Adam Williamson on the same post also make excellent points about the very important issues involved.

Sadly, Mark Shuttleworth has not weighed in yet. Maybe he will and maybe the agreement will be modified into something most people can live with. Only time will tell. Hopefully most people will realize that valid concerns do not equate to hatred.
