A few years ago, LiMo was the 'industries' initiative to move the mobile space to Linux.
I really thought it was going to make a difference.
However, I never saw an add for it. The topic was covered in my article: "Linux doesn't need marketing", which was more the vision of LiMo than mine. “Consumers should buy our phones because they're cool Samsung or Motorola gadgets, not because they run LiMo" is their vision. http://lxer.com/module/newswire/view/120486/index.html Boy, was I criticized for that vision. The critics have been proven right: Android sells very well, and devices are actively marketed as "Android devices" (Linux is not mentioned though). Motorola - together with Verizon - swang $100 million at it (http://www.droiddoes.com/) and they proved successful. Limo is less open than Android, and it was especially aimed for all separate customers to customize with their own 'shell'. It seems if it ever became a success, it only sold in Japan. As core member, if Access - the Japanese core member - is leaving LiMo, I guess we could assume LiMo is 'almost' dead now. What Google could learn, is all those "closed" overlay's may not be such a good idea after all. Pretty much as Nicholas stated over here: "Can the Android bloatware be turned off?" http://armdevices.net/2010/07/24/can-the-android-bloatware-u... |
