No "free" or "Linux" anywhere.

@gus3 Bearing in mind the huge share of the mobile phone market that runs on Linux I believe that a new or upgraded specialist phone distro from anybody is automatically relevant to Linux and, therefore, to FLOSS.

@rht:

One could say the same about web servers, but we don't see articles every time a new version of IIS escapes.

Scott,

You may have over reacted, though I too had similar thoughts.

Being my nasty self this article and others could fall under the theme of MS is ARMing itself. Here is one of the latest, noticed similar story on Wired earlier, http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/07/23/microsoft-grabs-hol...

This means, MS intends to fight on mobile hardware, whether it is too late will be determined by how successful those mobile devices are that use ARM CPUs and some version of Windows Mobile. I suspect that just like the internet they are behind currently, but their arm twisting business model along with media shills may still keep them in the running.

So there is some FlOSS here, even if it some nasty material caught between some teeth.

From what I gathered they are abandoning the Windows Mobile 6 style where you can install softwares and have a bit of freedom. They want to be like iPhone where you have lacking multitask feature, install from marketplace, and be more about social than business usage. The main reason why there are still people using Windows Mobile was these customization ability which started from their PocketPC days and its a bad idea to abandon that. I can't see too much young people jumping onto Windows Phones 7 for hip and fashion since Microsoft usually missed the mark in this category.

For starter, they called it Windows Phone 7. Sounded like Office Open.

I was right, it's humor:

July 13th , Steve Ballmer admits:

Quoting:Microsoft 'missed a generation' on the mobile side, but chief executive Steve Ballmer insists that the company's upcoming Windows Phone 7 will 'give you a set of Windows-based devices which people will be proud to carry'

12 days later, HP is ditching Windows Phone 7 in favour of their Linux-based WebOS.

Quoting:"In its bid to take on Apple and Google in smart-phones, Hewlett-Packard won't use Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 software.

Let's see, Slate seems delayed, Windows HP smart-phones canceled, and Courier project canceled as well (though MS says it was only a research project), and KIN canceled and about the "worst failure of 2010", probably $1 billion down the drain.

Still they think 'business' is going to want Windows Phone 7. Ah, those fond memories of Muhammed Saeed al-Sahaf...
