LXDE looks fantastic

Perhaps it is just me, but I cannot wait to play with LXDE.........I watched the video and suddenly had the impression I was watching a blazingly fast KDE3.5 but with pleasant upgrades to its looks and styles.........Generally speaking, with openSUSE, absolutely anything from any package can run in any of its desktop managers so that the KDE4 packages will be transferrable. LXDE looks like it will be a delight to use........but admittedly, that's before I get down and dirty with it. Here's hoping. Best of all: THERE IS NO CASHEW..........as tracyanne once implied: the only place for cashews is with salt on them in a "nibbles dish". |

I don't run Suse, but I do have two desktops running LXDE. Yes, it is blazingly fast. It's coming along quite nicely. Customization issues are a breeze to work around. |

4G of RAM, so lots of filesystem cache. The first login after boot takes a few seconds to get a usable LXDE desktop. Re-logging in to LXDE takes all of .5 seconds to a usable desktop. I really like it. |

Sorry, gave up on LXDE long time ago. Been playing with plain vanilla openbox all day though. That I can get excited about. LXDE feels way too much like Gnome XP, openbox on the other hand you can make feel like anything. |

@az: Have you considered Sawfish? |

Some comments on the above. LXDE attracted me as it was part of the openSUSE platform, and I currently use version 11 and KDE3.5. I don't have the time or inclination to rebuild or design a desktop, so the fact that LXDE was fully supported by openSUSE suggested strongly that it would "play nicely" with any KDE4 software apps I wanted to include. I also checked the LXDE site ( http://lxde.org/) and found it is strongly supported and undergoing development which means it will move forward as openSUSE moves forward. Sawfish would be fast indeed but requires a lot of work (http://sawfish.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page) and the same goes for openbox (http://openbox.org/). My feeling for both items is that while I have no doubt whatsoever that they are very, very good desktop managers, my perception is that they are both designed for the computer person who loves to tinker (and develop perhaps ?) and as such they aren't really my cup of tea, but I can see why azerthoth (and gus3 ?) would like them if that is their interest. I've tried Xfce briefly, but LXDE seems pretty good and with openSUSE supporting it, there is every likelihood a move to LXDE would be reasonably smooth. And one last thing: I said that the movie preview of LXDE began to remind me of a blazingly fast version of KDE3.5. I wonder if the powers-that-be at SUSE have done this very much on purpose to try to hold onto "welded-on" users of KDE3.5 That would make sense in my books.....but let's wait till I try the software. |

LXDE predates the first KDE4 release, although it's a lot more usable now than it was then. But, yeah, I use LXDE, XFCE, and e17 as alternatives to the KDE4 resources bloat. |
