Schill's that they are,... yes, downplay is right. There might be a point in quantifying Android separately from other Linux based smart-phone solutions, though. Android runs a non-mainstream kernel underneath a UI that can be locked down very tightly by vendors. So althoughh it IS Linux,... it's enough its own beast to treat differently. However, if they wanted to be honest about their statistics, they wouldn't say, "Android" and "Linux," they would say "Android" and "other Linux," with a nice big asterisk that clearly pointed out that Android was a Linux-based OS. But,... Gartner is not about honesty. They are about providing statistics to whomever is paying them the most scratch. Of course, you have lies, damned lies and statistics, don't you??? |
