Unfair comparison?

Is this Android - iPhone comparison really fair? The iPhone has exactly one manufacturer, while Android is sold by several vendors. It's like saying that a bunch of grapes outweighs, um, an apple. |

Perhaps it's not a question of whether the comparison is fair, but of whether it is interesting. |

Even though there may be more than 1 manufacturer for the Android phones, I think it's mostly HTC that has been making the popular Android phones, no? I've also seen people argue it's unfair because iPhone is only available for AT&T while Android handsets are available for any/all carriers, but I'd argue that Apple put itself into the "only 1 carrier" predicament, so I'm not sure it's a valid complaint. The only "valid" argument I've seen people make is that the Android phones have been selling like hotcakes because they often go with a 2-for-1 deal, but Apple could respond by offering 2-for-1 deals as well, and/or lowering their prices (they'd probably have to support other carriers too, though as I think that's likely their biggest setback). All that said, I think people are interested in this is because it's classic "Linux coming out on top against a proprietary vendor." |

Quoting:I think it's mostly HTC that has been making the popular Android phones, no? Nope, only 1/3's, 1/3's Motorola and 1/3s other. Guess you're not based in the US? And BTW, people never complain about Linux vs. Windows numbers, even though the Linux users represent different Linux distro's, so nothing new I'd say. |

Just wait the port of Android to the iPhone 3G is nearing completion. So just like sales of an OEM windows machine is no guarantee that it will keep running windows, the sale of an iphone will no longer mean that it's not also an android phone. As soon as the port is done I'll be picking up an iPhone to put it on, as 3G iphones are scads cheaper than anything running android at the moment. |
