I've been testing Gnome shell on a 10 inch Netbook, currently running Ubuntu 10.04, so it would be a pretty recent Gnome Shell.

There are a couple of issues I have with it.

1/ The Linux paradigm of listing applications by category is not used. you have this Find thing , but you need to know what the name of the application is that you want, otherwise how can you find it? Typing in the category doesn't work.

Having Application Categories, wheny ou click on the 'Applications" option, instead of simply listing all the Applications, as the current Application option does, would be good.

2/ I can't hide the top panel. On a full size desktop, it doesn't matter much, although I always have the top and bottom panel set to Auto Hide, no matter what size my desktop is, but on a net book with it's smaller screen real estate having the ability to auto hide the panel(s) is very useful, the extra bit of usable screen space can make a difference.

The ability to zoom an application when in "Activities Show" mode is really useful, as is the Ability to create Virtual Desktops on the fly.

3/ As you open more applications, at least on the netbook, the "Places" section gets pushed off the bottom of the screen.

Maybe redoing this area as a set of reveal areas would work better, and perhaps having a max height setting, so that when the max height is hit would cause the current area to scroll. Doing this would make it possible to have a categories list in the left panel, instead of crowding into the rest of the desktop.

Personally I'd like there to be the ability to close a Workspace that has applications open on it, either simply close the applications, or prompt to move them to another workspace.

I like the concept of Gnome Shell, it has, I believe a lot of potential. Unfortunately there are a few areas that I think need attention, to make it more usable.
