I have gthumb 2.11.2.1 to be more specific.

I did have a problem with Thunderbird 3, which I had installed but not yet used - the apt-get upgrade would hang because the system couldn't find the package on the mirror ... I removed Thunderbird, re-ran apt-get upgrade and everything rolled in as expected.

Regarding gthumb - I really don't care about exporting to Picasa or Facebook. I'd love an "Export" function that was like a save-as but allowed for a quick copy/resize/save operation ...

I remember somebody asking about a slide-show feature for gthumb. I didn't know if it used to have an automatic slideshow feature, but it sure doesn't have one now. You can do a manual slideshow by clicking the Previous and Next arrows, but nothing automatic (although, as I said, I don't remember there ever being one).

I do recall a feature where you could "call" a different editor into a specific image through gthumb. I used to find that somewhat useful. That feature is gone - I can live without it, I guess.

An automatic, timed slideshow function is included, and on the main toolbar in gThumb 2.10.11. That's the latest version I have, and it is indeed there, as is the Hot Keys feature you're referring to. The gThumb folks really took this stuff out in 2.11.x? I could also care less about web integration features.

The interface changed quite a bit from the version in Debian Lenny, which is what I'm accustomed to.

@Steven: Debian's package managers don't remove software during normal updates. Hell, I even have some left-over custom Etch packages on my Squeeze box. So, if you updated to 10.04 it would leave your Gthumb alone. You probably wouldn't get it if you installed from scratch though.

gThumb 2.11.x does have a slideshow feature, but for some reason the debian packager has disabled compilation of this feature, and this disabling was copied into the ubuntu package.

If you compile your own gThumb (2.11.3 has been released) it should work fine. If it doesn't, file a bug at http://bugzilla.gnome.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=gthumb

Also, right-clicking on an image and selecting "Open with" will show all the editors registered for that file type.

I built gthumb from ports in FreeBSD because their binary package doesn't include IPTC support. As compiling goes, it built pretty quickly.

This is one of the case where I will definitely look into compiling my own package just to make sure I have all the features I need.

My gthumb downgraded to 2.10 yesterday. It's very different. Some features came back, others went away ... slideshow returns, expanded metadata framework disappears, edit-with-external apps returns ...

Steven,

After "lost that", but "got other" ... what's the conclusion. Thumbs up [kill them where they stand*] or Thumbs Down [Run them into the ground and show no mercy*]?

Since it doesn't apply to Canonical when dealing with their users; why should it apply to their users when dealing with Canonical?

jd,

So what's your question?

I guess I'd like to see ALL the features - especially calling external editors and the extended metadata. The latter is most important to me, and if gthumb stays at 2.10, I'll be compiling my own gthumb from source.

While I'd miss the ability to call an external editor (pretty much only the GIMP in my case), it's not all that important.

I really don't care about the slide-show feature. For all I know I just couldn't find it in 2.11.

But the extended metadata editing is key.
