I think I am going to launch a brand new Linux distro, STFUbuntu. All week I've had to scour the tubes to find Linux stories not about Ubuntu for brand x. It's a sickness! A pandemic! |

lol.
I know how you feel.
As soon as one release is out, there's a flood of articles about it.
Then as soon as that dies down it's a flood of articles for the next release until it comes out.
Rinse, Repeat. I suspect most of us really don't care about all the predictions for the next release and all the analysis articles of every single alpha and beta release leading up to it. |

I do. Really. I read each and every one with intense interest. Though...again...what, exactly is this Ubuntu thing? Sounds like something you'd tell the hitter when you want to advance the runner on base. |

Looks nice. Would need to be cross platform for them to make any money though. Like iTunes. Same as Ubuntu one. I can just use Dropbox cause its cross platform. Ubuntu needs to get the sound system in the OS worked out also. Its a jumbled mess. |

I'm no 'buntu fan, for a lot of reasons, but some of you make it sound like it's okay for Linux to grow and become more popular -- as long as it's not Ubuntu. A rising tide lifts all boats. |

You're right, ComputerBob, a rising tide lifts all boats, and all paths to Linux are good paths. I still reserve the right to whine about the endless torrents of breathless Ubuntu hype, with a six-month release cycle I never get a breather. I'm probably more exposed to it than most folks because of my job, I wish I had a cyber-shovel to clear a path. Or better, a little tracked Bobcat with a blade. Yeahhh, a bobcat....that's the ticket! |
dinotrac Mar 24, 2010 1:43 PM EDT |
TC -- You will have to see local legend Michael Jordan for that ticket, as he now owns the Bobcats. |

Exactly my feeling TC. Most distros you see news maybe for a beta or two and for new releases, not for every single alpha/beta/release/patch/update. :P It just gets tiring after a while. |

Quoting:All week I've had to scour the tubes to find Linux stories not about Ubuntu for brand x. Oh, you're so lucky! I just spent a few hours writing about running multiple 'Bleeding edge' Firefoxes at the same time (in my opinion this is really cool and nifty), and compiling and doing some cool CLI stuff using Mercurial and command line js, and guess what, it doesn't use Ubuntu as the example distro to do this! It even includes a cool WindowMaker screenshot (featuring Scott!), definitely not taken from Wubuntu - becasue luckily (!) Wubuntu doesn't exist. Next week however, I might be writing something about Ubuntu and how cool it is, and I will be sure mention it as the one and only root distro out there. I'm going to make my own Ubuntu distro with Fluxbox, but it doesn't contain /bin/ls, to make it really unique. How's that for ya! It will be called Flucksbuntu, but wait, if I remove "/bin/ls" I should spell Flucksbuntu without the L and the S I think. Je weet tog! (That's Dutch for about "Ya mom back at cha"). |

Quoting:Most distros you see news maybe for a beta or two and for new releases, not for every single alpha/beta/release/patch/update. That's what marketing is all about. Note all the breathless articles about iPods IPhones and iPads, even before they are released. It's the expectation factor that gets most people salivating for them. Canonical are just better at marketing than most distros. |

Quoting:Or better, a little tracked Bobcat with a blade. Quoting:like this one: [HYPERLINK@www.bobcat.com] but TC, that bobcat is not tracked, nor does it have a blade. Though that does look a little more robust than my snow thrower. Don't know if I can talk the wife into it just yet, putting in the garage and all... but someday. |
HoTMetaL Mar 24, 2010 5:21 PM EDT |
Enough about iPads and Bobcats. Let's talk about Ubuntu. =D |

U What? |
theboomboomcars Mar 24, 2010 5:28 PM EDT |
But HoTMetaL, bobcats are cool. |
tuxchick Mar 24, 2010 5:30 PM EDT |
theboomboomcars, I'm not, picky I just want one. With all the attachments. I rent one with a backhoe every couple years to clean out my irrigation ditches, and that is the most fun there is. Great scoops of rich wet glop, plop into the garden. Good stuff. Hans, you are the baddest! |

Quoting:Most distros you see news maybe for a beta or two and for new releases, not for every single alpha/beta/release/patch/update. :P It just gets tiring after a while. That reminds me of many, many years ago, when my wife and I made our living for 5 years as singers, and I wrote our songs and played the 12-string guitar. We performed for 427 audiences in 26 states. It was a lot of fun, but it also got old many, many times. Especially around the 45th performance of a 57-city, 59-day road tour across 13 states. But every time it started to get old for us, we consciously reminded ourselves that, for many of our audience members, it was the very first time they were seeing us perform. Similarly, maybe we can all tell ourselves that although some of us may be tired of the constant 'buntu media machine, that media machine is telling a lot of people about Linux for the very first time. |

@Hans:Quoting:but wait, if I remove "/bin/ls"We can still use "echo *" and "stat *". |

> that, for many of our audience members, it was the very first time they were seeing us perform. Same thing with sex. |
