I look forward to an active CD or DVD for this version.....whichever. Strange this article should pop up today. I have just received my latest copy of a major UK Linux journal, for January and on p23 of vol 127, is a review of openSUSE 11.2 which contains KDE4.3.3 The reviewer's comment is rather revealing: "Although OpenSUSE is probably the best delivered KDE desktop, it still feels unfinished, but if you're used to KDE4.x, it should be fine." That says it all from where I see the situation: I use KDE3.5 on openSUSE 11.0. KDE4.4 will arrive on openSUSE in the second half of this year.......Now that will be interesting.......roll on KDE4.5.

In a week or so , PCLinuxOS "" should "" release it's first official KDE4.4....in case you want a taste. Most probably a LiveCD ( or DVD )

Can't wait to use 4.4. Mandriva Italia have done backports in the past of the latest 4.x version, so I'm hoping they'll do the same this time. Otherwise I assume 2010 Spring will have it.

Hmmm. So maybe 4.5 will finally be an acceptable desktop for the rest of us. Only what? Two and a half years after 4.0,. and 8 and a half years after 3.0?

Great job, guys.

According to this:

A kde4.4 backport is already available for mandriva 2010.

I see this from news.opensuse.org this morning:

"KDE SC 4.3.5 is about to become available for openSUSE 11.2 as an online update (from 4.3.1). This release fixes many bugs, so we decided to push it as an online update instead of making it an optional update in the Build Service, and by fixing bugs we give our KDE contributors more time to work for openSUSE 11.3."

I've been using the latest update of 4.3.x since moving to openSUSE 11.2, and have found it acceptable. Before 4.3 I wouldn't have touched it, but with some slight modifications (which I can now make, where before I couldn't), it's fairly comfortable, even for this die hard KDE 3.5 fan.

4.4 repos are available now in openSUSE, and I think I'll move to them and see what's new/fixed.

@pmpatrick - Thanks! I'm off to give that a go.

@dino - I have this vague recollection of us discussing the speed (or otherwise) of KDE4 development somewhere before! ;~)

hmm, we pushed 4.4 into our non testing repo last week. Having had beta* and RC* in our testing repos through out their life cycle.

So long as there is some listening to the user base, there is hope.

Absolutely. Better late than never, as Firefox proved WRT to Mozilla.

At least KDE doesn't have to worry about the likes of Internet Explorer eating up 90% of the DE space.

Somebody wake me when kde 4.x reaches the level of functionality that 3.5.x offered...

herzeleid --

Come on, guy -- don't be a party pooper.

Don'tcha know the KDE team got to do a lot of REALLY kewl stuff and make some really boss effects. Pumped up their resumes, too.

Got to focus on the important stuff.

@hkwint - hey, whatever it takes. I'm that dedicated...

@dino - when you put it that way, it does make me look like an ungrateful lout. Oh well, I'll have to work on that.
