and why you would pick either one over debian??

Can't see why you'd pick either one over either debian or mandriva. Different strengths of course, but if you're prepared to make the 6 month release compromise, why not mandriva? Otherwise, why not debian? Very strange. Especially the cult of Ubuntu, which seems, ominously, to be the favorite of the MacHeads. What they seem to like about it is its focus on something they call 'usability'. When I hear people talk about usability, I reach for a bucket. |

While I agree that endless "usability" comparisons are usually just patting one's self and friends on the back, I will make one bit caveat: The system must, at least, be usable. |

Yes, you can perform studies to determine what percentage of people find a given process easy or hard. But you're never going to get a consensus on such matters, only things like 60%-40% or 75%-25% preferences. |
